I have been experimenting with these ideas for a client of mine that sells kitchen and bathroom tiles. I set up a blog and wrote some posts that were, in a way related to the subject matter, but targeted at more general users. I'd just add that you shouldn't get too caught up on being "link bait" to the point of wanting tremendous links or traffic. Create something engaging and people will find it if properly promoted and most importantly: know your audience!
